What’s that Smell?

Have you gone nose blind to the odors in your home? Here is a good way to test…bring a kid under 10 in and ask them. Out of the mouths of babes, right? Whether it is pet odor, teenagers (like my house), or a basement that just smells old, here are three tips to help you.

  1. Never use air fresheners. There are so many good ones out there, and I resist the urge to buy three every time I enter a certain store that sells scents. But here is why I don’t recommend them. They only mask the odor, and if you’re selling your home, buyers wonder what the seller is trying to hide. They sometimes don’t even realize they are thinking that, but trust me…they are.

  2. Bake something. Who doesn’t love the yummy smell of fresh baked cookies? If you don’t, I don’t trust you. And they’re so easy to bake anymore. Buy one of those pre-packaged rolls and throw them in the oven. Presto! You’ve got a warm inviting home with goodies to serve!

  3. Open the windows for about 15 minutes a day. There is nothing like fresh air coming in and dirty air going out. I always think of my mamaw and papaw and their old country farm house that didn’t have air conditioning. But I loved the windows being open and hearing the crickets chirping in the night air and the birds in the early morning! I couldn’t wait to run downstairs and go with my papaw to help him milk the cows!

Obviously, these are quick fixes not intended to replace finding the actual problem(s) and tackling it (you can’t sell your kids), but these tips will get you through a girls night at your house any night!
